Why Tyson Fury’s victory is one of the best things to happen to boxing.

Tyson Fury is a dick… there is no doubt about this. The guy insults others personally, threatens journalists with violence like he did to Oliver Holt, and thinks being gay is as bad as being a paedophile. In fact there is a serious argument that someone who thinks abortion and being homosexual are the devil’s work, shouldn’t be given the platform of the Heavyweight title to spout his questionable views. As a role model he is as bad as they come.

But despite all of this, he has just revived the dead corpse which is the Heavyweight boxing division. Since Lennox Lewis hung up his gloves it’s been dull, so dull that when I was growing up attempting to take an interest I gave up, seeing no excitement aside from in the lighter divisions.

The Klitschko brothers to be fair to them have been the standard bearers, have and done so with class. But they were killing the division, because the truth is they are not why people watch boxing. The mechanical efficiency is what certain hardcore fans love, the professionalism and the tactics, but the mass majority of normal Boxing fans who have stopped watching the sport want hard hitting adrenaline filled slugfests.

Which is why to be honest its good time Wladimir took a step down, because Fury isn’t nearly as good and fights from now on may not be such one sided affairs.

All the best fighters have a back story and many are dreadful people, but thats why people want to see them fight. Its the characters who make it what it is

One thing you can never challenge Fury on is his character.
